Communication is a complex and nuanced process that goes beyond the mere exchange of words between individuals. The surface-level perception of communication as a simple back-and-forth exchange can often lead to misunderstandings and miscommunications, as individuals may lack the skills, language, or foundational understanding of communication necessary to convey their ideas, thoughts, or feelings effectively.
The study of communication is a vast and diverse field that draws on various disciplines, including philosophy, humanities, art, music, economics, social sciences, and human-technology interaction. The National Communication Association, with over a dozen divisions specializing in communication, has identified focus areas like peace studies, film studies, critical race studies, co-cultural communication, social media communication, conflict resolution, language studies, and more.
With a clear understanding of what constitutes effective communication, pursuing it can be a manageable task. This is why a deep dive into the study of communication and leadership is crucial, as it equips us with the knowledge to navigate the complexities of human interaction. Teaching communication skills requires addressing and changing underlying behaviour to meet effective communication's diverse and broad facets. However, with a deeper understanding of communication and the ability to adapt to different situations, individuals can enhance their communication skills and become more effective leaders.
